In a wholly new kind of exhibition, a show of collage, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture by three female artists’ was lined up for ‘disruption’ and complete rearrangement by Lincoln-based collective General Practice halfway through its run.

Anna Fairchild, Lucy Renton and Sue Withers had their new work handed over to [gP] for the second half of the exhibition’s run. [gP] had carte blanche to rearrange the show, moving or subtracting works, adding works of their own, or introducing whatever they considered appropriate to alter visitors’ experience.

The aim is to explore ways to extend the ‘lifetime’ of an exhibition for artists working in a self-sustaining and largely non commercial context. Whether glamorous figures such as Peggy Guggenheim and Maureen Paley or more ordinary neighbourhood allies, most UK artists do not have a personal or institutional patron or curator to stimulate work or brief them on their development. Yet a thriving artist-led independent scene survives. This exhibition talks to that context, by sharing in public the critical conversation that goes into the making and curation of work beyond the buzz of the private view.

Self-initiated shows often have a “boom and bust” emotional framework that finishes with the opening night. This project helps us to look again, presenting a transparent look at the artistic process and creative ways of thinking and generating work.

The Contributors

Anna Fairchild, Lucy Renton and Sue Withers have exhibited in many different contexts from galleries and symposia, to artists bookfairs and festivals, in locations including the ICA (London) Dean Clough (Halifax) Cross Lane Projects (Kendal) and Beecroft Gallery (Southend) Folkestone Triennial and the Venice Biennale.

Working nationally and internationally, [gP] aim to blur the line between facilitators and practitioners.
